A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Saturday shooting death of Daniel Betker at a Mesa McDonald’s, police said Monday.

Carlos Heard II has been charged with second-degree murder and other offenses related to the 22-year-old man’s death and was taken into custody on Jan. 14.

At about 3 a.m. Jan. 13, Mesa police officers responded to the McDonald’s at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue for reports of a shooting. They found Betker in the drive-through lane with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

“Officers spoke to several witnesses and utilized video surveillance from the surrounding area to identify a potential lead on the described suspect vehicle, a black Hyundai Elantra,” police said in a release.

“They located the vehicle on surveillance video and obtained a license plate, which identified 26-year-old Carlos Heard II as the registered owner. Heard II matched the suspect description provided by witnesses at the scene of the shooting.”

Officers found the Hyundai Elantra at an apartment complex at 1055 W. Baseline Road in Mesa. Search warrants were served on the vehicle, and the apartment associated with the suspect whose “involvement in the shooting was discovered, to include a handgun,” police said.
