Mesa police arrest suspect in Feb. 4 killing

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in a killing that occurred earlier this month at a Main Street apartment in Mesa, police said.

Mario Ortiz Jr. also faces charges of armed robbery and burglary.

Police found Kenneth Gordon, 29, dead just before 8:30 a.m. Feb. 4 during a welfare check at an apartment in the 6700 block of East Main Street, Mesa police said in a release.

The incident was deemed a suspicious death, and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that Gordon had two puncture wounds to his right thigh, ruling his death a homicide.

Detectives identified Ortiz as a person of interest and learned he was being detained by Phoenix police on a felony parole warrant.

During an interview in Mesa, “Ortiz made several statements placing himself at the homicide,” the release stated.

He was booked into jail, and his bond has been set at $100,000.
