Mesa police on Monday arrested Kenneth Montgomery, 65, for the shooting death of a 61-year-old woman and booked him into jail on a $1 million bond.

The shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the parking lot at 1947 S. Greenfield, police said.

Albert Leotta, 27, called 911 and reported that he and his 61-year-old mother, Antoinette Leotta, had been shot. They were in separate vehicles, parked next to each other.

Antoinette was pronounced dead at the scene, and Albert Leotta was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, police said.

Several eyewitnesses described the shooter and his truck, and an officer assisted in identifying the truck and driver after it matched the description of a contact he made on an earlier call for service, police said.

Just before 11:30 a.m., the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office notified the Mesa Police Department that they had Montgomery detained near Bush Highway at milepost 29.8.

Mesa officers found the truck near Butcher Jones Recreation Area and said they found a bloody handgun on the dashboard.

Through the investigation, officers learned that Montgomery was a stranger to the shooting victims.

The suspect faces a second-degree murder charge among others, police said.
