Mesa police arrest 3 suspected of involvement in shooting, robbery, crash

A man and two boys have been arrested as suspects in a Friday evening crime spree that Mesa police said involved them shooting at a car and committing possibly two armed robberies before crashing their vehicle.

Officers responded to a shooting call about 5:40 p.m. Aug. 11 near Mesa Drive and Southern Avenue. One of the victims said a vehicle pulled up next to theirs and fired a weapon.

“Three minutes later, our Real Time Crime Center alerted officers of what looked like an armed robbery happening at Guerrero Rotary Park,” police stated in a release.

“Officers arrived quickly and got behind the suspect vehicle. They tried to pull the vehicle over, but the vehicle refused to stop and took off, ultimately crashing at Country Club Drive and 8th Avenue.”

The three suspects ran from the crashed vehicle in different directions, but officers caught them as they fled, police said.

The adult suspect had what police said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to a leg, and he was taken to a hospital.

The two other suspects are under 18 years old, police said.

Police said that while officers were at the collision scene, another victim approached them and said the trio attempted another robbery at Country Club Drive and 10th Avenue.
