A 27-year-old man is in the hospital with critical injuries after being shot Friday afternoon by a Mesa police officer, officials said.

David Dimas is expected to survive the shooting, which occurred at 3 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Garden Spot Mobile Home Park, 32 S. Barkley, police said.

Officers were sent to the mobile home park just before 2:30 p.m. for a domestic disturbance call, according to a release.

“The caller stated that her stepfather, 27-year-old David Dimas, was inside a storage shed, lighting items on fire and appeared to be harming himself with a utility knife,” police stated in the release.

Officers arrived and evacuated the home before approaching the shed.

Dimas walked from the shed toward officers, refusing to stop when told, police said.

“Dimas had both hands covered with clothing and raised them pointing at the officers while moving into a shooting stance,” the release stated.

“Less lethal beanbag rounds and a Taser were deployed on Dimas at the same time as one officer fired his duty weapon, striking Dimas.”

It was later discovered that Dimas had a cordless drill in one hand and the utility knife in the other. They were concealed by T-shirts around his hands, police said.

Officers performed life-saving measures at the scene before medical personnel took over and transported Dimas to a hospital.

There were no injuries to officers or bystanders, police said.
