An 18-year-old has been arrested as the suspect in the shooting death of a motorcyclist in Mesa.
Anton Sereghy has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of Arron Hendricks, 42, who was shot about 5:15 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Sossaman and Main Street in Mesa.
Police said witnesses told them Hendricks was riding east on Main Street with a group of motorcyclists when they became involved in a "road rage" incident with those inside a red Nissan.
An argument occurred when both vehicles stopped for a red light at Sossaman and Main, police said. Hendricks was a few feet away from the Nissan when a shot was fired, striking him in the neck.
After the shooting, the red Nissan fled eastbound on Main Street, police said.
Witnesses gave police a description of the driver and the suspect who was sitting in the passenger seat.
Officers also were shown video from a witness dashcam, helping them identify and find the Nissan.
Authorities said the driver and Sereghy admitted to being involved in a road rage altercation with several motorcyclists.
Sereghy said he was “scared about being assaulted by the motorcyclists and shot Arron because he ‘lost it’ when the motorcyclists were yelling and cussing at him and because Arron ‘spit at him’,” the release stated.
