Mesa officer shoots man running across US 60, ending pursuit
Mesa police responded Sunday afteroon to a call at an apartment complex that led to a pursuit and shooting on US 60, authorities said.
A Mesa police officer shot a 37-year-old man Sunday afternoon as he was running in the eastbound travel lanes of the US 60 just west of Alma School Road.
The man, who has not been identified, was suspected of making threats with a knife at an apartment complex near the 600 block of South Country Club Drive. Police arrived just after 4 p.m. Aug. 10, and the man drove away in a truck, according to a Mesa Police Department release.
A pursuit began that led to the US 60 westbound on ramp from Alma School Road.

A Mesa police officer shot a 37-year-old man Sunday afternoon as he was running in the eastbound travel lanes of the US 60 just west of Alma School Road.
The man, who has not been identified, was suspected of making threats with a knife at an apartment complex near the 600 block of South Country Club Drive. Police arrived just after 4 p.m. Aug. 10, and the man drove away in a truck, according to a Mesa Police Department release.
A pursuit began that led to the US 60 westbound on ramp from Alma School Road.
Officers attempted a “pursuit intervention technique,” police said, and the truck came to a stop.
“The man got out, running southbound across the westbound lanes of US-60. He jumped over the median and continued across eastbound lanes of travel. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the man reach for his waistband. This is when the officer involved shooting occurred,” the release stated.
The man was struck at least one time by gunfire. Medical aid was provided, and the man was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, police said.
One officer shot his weapon during the incident. No officers or other individuals were injured during the shooting.
The incident is being investigated by the Gilbert Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
