A man was jailed without bond after he allegedly sped through a street in Fountain Hills and seriously injured his passenger when he crashed.
The incident happened Sunday morning near Palisades Boulevard and Thistle Drive.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy in the area spotted a vehicle traveling over 60 mph in a 45-mph zone. The deputy tried to follow the vehicle but backed off a pursuit because he believed the vehicle was approaching nearly 100 mph and feared other people would be in danger if a chase started.
Moments later, the deputy responded to a home in the area, where the speeding vehicle had crashed into. Court records state the vehicle had crossed through at least two homes before crashing into the second home.
Another vehicle was involved in the collision, but the occupants were not injured.
Responding deputies found two occupants crawling out of the suspect vehicle, records state.
Both were taken to a Scottsdale hospital with numerous injuries to their bodies.
Rosario Vega, 37, was released and booked into jail on aggravated assault and endangerment charges. Authorities learned he was on supervised release and had a federal extradition warrant for trafficking drugs into the country.
The 27-year-old female passenger remained in the hospital as of Monday, Feb. 10. She had fractures of her skull, neck and clavicle, along with a traumatic brain injury with bleeding, records state. She was in a medicated state within an intensive care unit.
Mr. Vega admitted to driving recklessly, though MCSO noted he was not impaired.
