Mesa Crime Lab uses DNA from water bottle to ID robbery suspect
A 31-year-old man has been arrested for armed robbery and burglary after police said they found DNA evidence on a water bottle in a 7-Eleven trash can.
Jody Naputi was arrested Dec. 7 in Mesa in connection with a September incident that included a stabbing outside the 7-Eleven at Gilbert Road and Main Street, police said.
Police responded to a call about 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the convenience store and said they learned that a man had taken a drink without paying for it. A store employee confronted the man outside the store, and the suspect pushed him to the ground, kicked him, pulled out a knife and stabbed the worker.

The suspect went to a McDonald’s, entered the employee area, took a cup and filled it at the drink station, according to a release. He was confronted by a manager and pepper sprayed by a customer before leaving, police said, adding he then went to a light rail platform.
Surveillance videos were obtained at McDonald’s, 7-Eleven and the light rail station. Police said they saw the man throw away the water bottle at the 7-Eleven.
The Mesa Crime Lab reported Nov. 9 that DNA obtained from the bottle and entered into the Combined DNA Index System identified Naputi, whose MVD photo matched the surveillance videos, authorities said.
Naputi was found on Dec. 7 in the 600 block of South 93rd Street in Mesa, arrested and booked into jail on a $100,000 bond, according to a Mesa Police Department release.
