The Mesa City Council approved a locally preferred alternative streetcar extension that would create another route between Mesa and Tempe.
The move was approved by a 5-2 vote during the Dec. 9 meeting. Council members Scott Somers and Mark Freeman were the dissenting votes.
According to council documents, the extension would create a new route at the streetcar's current end at Marina Heights in Tempe and travel east on Rio Salado Parkway to Dobson Road, and then south on Dobson and ending at the Main Street in Mesa.
