CANCER SURVIVOR

Mesa cancer survivor wants to pay it forward

Credits son, nonprofit for supporting her through treatment

In 2016, Alicia Dominguez was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. While a cancer diagnosis is never convenient, her diagnosis came at a unfortunate time as she was recently divorced and was the sole parent of a 9-year-old child in Mesa.

Dominguez faced the difficult challenge of balancing taking care of her son as well as undergoing treatment, without a significant other to fallback on for financial security.

That all changed when a social worker visited Dominguez and told her about The Singletons, a local nonprofit that provides multiple forms of support to single parents battling cancer. This support includes providing essential items and food to the homes of cancer patients to ease their financial burden, holding community events for single-parent cancer patients and their kids to come together and bond over their shared experiences, and much more.
