Mercury center Brittney Griner and guard Skylar Diggins-Smith were both named to the Associated Press’ All-WNBA first team Wednesday. The Mercury was the only team with two players on the first team.
Griner, on the shortlist of WNBA MVP candidates, did not receive any votes for Player of the Year, however. That honor went unanimously to Connecticut Sun center Jonquel Jones, a strong indication that Jones will also win the MVP.
In the five previous seasons that AP has given out WNBA awards, the player awarded the AP Player of the Year was also named MVP. The MVP award is determined by panel of sportswriters and broadcasters nationwide.
