Meet Your Neighbor: Tempe resident pens book on refugee experience

Every day of Aida Sibic’s life has been irrevocably impacted by war.

Now in her early 40s and living in Tempe, Sibic and her family were forced to leave their homeland of Bosnia and Herzegovina behind and became refugees in California. Cut off from friends and loved ones, Sibic formed a love of technology as a teen in a new country. She now works in cybersecurity.

“As a teenager, I became fascinated with technology and computer information systems,” she said. “This was in the late ‘90s, shortly after my family fled the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Becoming refugees meant that most of the friends I grew up with, including me, were displaced all around the world. Because of that, I eventually lost contact with almost everyone I knew. Those early online chat programs allowed me to successfully find my friends again, to find out where they ended up in the world and helped us all stay in touch throughout the years. As a result, computer technology became a passion of mine.”
