Medicare scams are convincing: Protect yourself with knowledge

Report suspected fraud by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227, the Office of Inspector General’s fraud hotline at 1-800-447-8477, the Federal Bureau of Investigations at fbi.gov/elderfraud, or the Federal Trade Commission at www.IdentityTheft.gov. More information on reporting Medicare Fraud can be found at medicare.gov/basics/reporting-medicare-fraud-and-abuse.

Medicare scams appear professional and legitimate, using various tactics such as promises of free items or offers of free genetic testing to secure your personal information.

Scammers of Medicare often call over the phone; however, Medicare itself will never call you unless requested. It’s best to avoid the call and hang up.
