Medical group gives Valleywise Health Foundation $1.75M

Part of organization's fundraising efforts for new hospital, training

Valleywise Health Foundation was given a $1.75 million gift from District Medical Group, the physician group serving all of Valleywise Health.

The DMG gift was made as part of Valleywise Health Foundation’s $50 million ALL IN for Valleywise Campaign, culminating with the opening of the new 10-story Valleywise Health Medical Center, currently under construction and scheduled to open in early 2024.

The new acute care hospital at 2601 E. Roosevelt Road in Phoenix will replace the current teaching hospital opened in 1971.

DMG collaborates with Valleywise Health to facilitate more than 450,000 patient visits each year throughout its hospital and clinic network.

“On behalf of the more than 650 District Medical Group physicians and other providers serving in Valleywise Health facilities across Maricopa County, we are proud to pledge our financial support to critical programs for our community’s most vulnerable patients and recognize the exceptional DMG faculty providers practicing at the 16 Valleywise Health facilities throughout Maricopa County,” said DMG President and CEO Dr. Kote Chundu.

As a founding member of the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance, DMG physicians and allied health providers serve by providing patient care and serving as a training partner, along with Valleywise Health, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Creighton University.

Its purpose is to increase the number of physicians and other health professionals in Arizona by improving and expanding current health education programs.

“District Medical Group physicians have provided exceptional, compassionate care at Valleywise Health for nearly 30 years,” said Valleywise Health President and CEO Steve Purves. “We value their continued partnership and look forward to putting this significant financial gift to use as we transform our public teaching health system to better care for those who need us most. We are grateful for this partnership and very significant gift.”

DMG physicians oversee various medical residency and fellowship programs, and the group looks forward to doing more to help bring in more physicians to the Valley and state, said Dr. Dan Hobohm, DMG’s board chair.

“Through our partnership with Valleywise Health, DMG has produced more board-certified practicing physicians than any other organization in Arizona,” he said in a release. “We look forward to advancing both the clinical and teaching environments for our patients and learners with modern new facilities.”

Valleywise Health Foundation board Chair Patti Gentry said in a press release DMG has played an important role in teaching future doctors.

“What many in the community might not know is the vital teaching role District Medical Group physicians at Valleywise Health fulfill, benefiting health systems throughout the Valley,” she said. “Investment in programs to enhance patient care and help seasoned faculty teach future health care professionals who will practice throughout Arizona and the U.S. is critical. We are grateful for the expertise, compassion and care DMG providers invest each day, and are especially thankful for this truly impactful investment in Valleywise Health.”
