The sheriff’s office confirmed a woman who died and a child who was injured when a vehicle struck them was and are the wife and daughter of one of their deputies.
“We are saddened by the tragic death of the wife, and injuries to the daughter, of Deputy Sergeant Steve Chervenak,” MCSO stated in a release. “Our team is with Sergeant Chervenak and his family to ensure we provide all possible support during this difficult time.”
Mr. Chervenak has been with MCSO since 2007.
Sheriff Paul Penzone requests for the privacy of the Chervenak family.
Phoenix police said a man accused of driving onto a sidewalk and intentionally striking a woman and a child, killing the woman, was booked into jail.
They said 45-year-old Trent Ferree is being held on suspicion of one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Police said witnesses reported seeing Mr. Ferree back up his truck to strike the 47-year-old woman a second time Wednesday evening before witnesses dragged him from his pickup and held him for police.

They said an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured while a 53-year-old man and 48-year-old man weren’t hurt.
It’s not immediately known whether Mr. Ferree has an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
“If members of the public want to help the Chervenak family, they will get that opportunity once this situation stabilizes, and we can determine the best way to do so,” MCSO stated in its release. “In the meantime, please keep the Chervenak family in your thoughts and prayers.
