MCSO body scanner detects firearm on jail inmate after 2 searches failed

A recently installed body scanner detected a concealed firearm over the weekend on an inmate, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The inmate passed through two manual searches Sept. 14 before arriving for the MCSO’s intake, transfer and release process, according to a release.

“The success of the body scanner affirms that the decision to integrate this technology into jail protocols was a wise investment," Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said in the release.

The ability to uncover dangerous weapons that could be missed through standard procedures “significantly mitigates the risks of contraband entering the facility,” the release stated.
