MCSO arrests man in Avondale crash that killed 1, injured 3

A 19-year-old man is suspected of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed one of his passengers and injured three people, including himself.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office reports Gabino Matancillas, 19, was booked into jail Monday on charges of reckless manslaughter, aggravated assault, endangerment and aggravated DUI.

His arrest stems from a fatal crash Dec. 29, 2018 near Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road.

MCSO said the driver of a pickup truck failed to see a semi-truck stopped at a stop sign. The pickup then collided with the back of the semi.

The driver of the semi was not injured. However, MCSO states one passenger in the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene.

MCSO identified her as Jacqueline Pacheco, 18.

Two other passengers, ages 17 and 20, sustained serious injuries. One of them was described as having life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup, identified as Mr. Matancillas, suffered a left leg fracture.

No one in the pickup truck was wearing a seat belt, records state.

Mr. Matancillas told MCSO he had been smoking marijuana prior to the crash. MCSO also found several packs of alcoholic beverages at the crash scene.

The driver also had his license suspended for a DUI conviction in November out of Avondale.

Mr. Matancillas was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

He is due in court Jan. 7 and 10.
