Mayo Clinic to invest $1.9B in Phoenix campus

Mayo Clinic plans to invest nearly $1.9 billion in its Phoenix campus as part of its ongoing effort to expand and help patients.

The plan, under Mayo’s “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” strategy, will bring with new care concepts, physical spaces and technologies, officials said. It represents Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo’s largest investment in the state.

“Through this work, we are physically and digitally transforming health care and blurring the lines between inpatient and outpatient care to support Category-of-One health care for our patients, a Category-of-One workplace for our staff and to serve as a blueprint for the world,” said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic.

Part of the investment will be a 1.2 million-square-foot expansion of buildings with a new procedural building on the campus that also houses Mayo’s hospital. Also included will be a five-floor vertical and horizontal expansion of the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building, more technology, 11 operating rooms and two patient units with 48 beds.

“This incredible investment will forever change the patient and staff experience in Arizona as Mayo Clinic grows and reinvents its nationally recognized clinical care, research and education,” said Dr. Richard Gray, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, adding the additions will increase space at the campus by about 60%.

The Arizona project is part of a series of work being done across Mayo’s network in Minnesota and Florida.

“The dramatic growth in our metropolitan area, state and region has led to an escalating need for care of patients with complex medical conditions that is difficult to accommodate with our current technology and infrastructure,” Gray said.
