Mattel park, VAI delays tweak Glendale budget

Projected revenue not tied to any city project

For the first time, delays to the opening of Mattel Adventure Park and the larger surrounding VAI Resort are having a tangible impact on Glendale city budget projections.

Mattel announced on Oct. 28 the opening date for the theme park would move from late 2024 to 2025 as part of VAI’s phase one opening. In July, VAI announced phased openings starting at 2025 after originally projecting a 2024 opening.

In its fiscal year 2025 budget, the city projected $32 million in revenue from the resort, theme park and associated parking and destinations. Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps stated in an email that no city projects or expenditures were tied to that originally projected $32 million and
