Mass retirement at Scottsdale Fire doesn’t happen

Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon was not afraid all 108 crew members eligible to retire on July 1 would walk away on that day -- and they didn’t.

Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon had been staring down a doomsday clock of sorts for a while.

The fatal stroke of the clock was supposed to be midnight, July 1.

That’s when 108 members of his crew -- just over a fourth of the department’s workforce -- were eligible to re retire with full benefits.
