'Mask Alive! Festival of Masks' in March in Mesa

Posted

Make plans to dance and groove to music from around the globe as Cultural Coalition presents the fifth annual Mask Alive! Festival of Masks 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Pioneer Park, 526 E. Main St. in Mesa.

This year, Cultural Coalition is bringing international musicians QVLN and Sunny Z to perform at this free annual festival celebrating the art of the mask used by cultures around the world. A renowned violinist, QVLN regularly performs with the Los Angeles band Las Cafeteras and Tucson favorite Orkesta Mendoza, according to a release.

In addition to music by QVLN and Sunny Z to open and close this year’s festival, Cultural Coalition will have a diverse line-up of masked performances throughout the day.

Each year, Mask Alive showcases the uniting tradition of using masks as a storytelling tool by cultures from around the world. This year, festival attendees will see performances by Chinese Lion Dancers, Desert Sounds, Quetzalli Ballet Folklorico, Japanese Taiko Drummers, Astarte Belly Dancing, a drumming finale with artist Zarco Guerrero’s hand-carved drums and the Parade of Puppets.

Applications to participate in the festival as a sponsor or vendor are open for artists, food trucks, small businesses and nonprofits at culturalcoalition.com/events/mask-alive.

Free arts and craft activities for families, local food trucks and opportunities to join in the masked celebrations will all return as part of the festival this year.

This event is made possible in part by the Raza Development Fund and Mesa City Council members David Luna, Francisco Heredia, and Vice Mayor Jenn Duff.
