SURPRIZE, Ariz. - Marie Mohr-Grandstaff of Sun City Grand, passed peacefully on July 7, 2014. She was the 5th of eighteen children and hails from the small farm community of Wichita, Kansas. She launched her career by working for the International Grail Women's Movement. For seven years, she lived overseas teaching English and Religion in Indonesia. Marie's mastery of language and culture led her to a teaching position at Stanford University, where she taught the Indonesian language for ten years. She capped off her accomplished career with a prestigious assignment with the U.S. State Department as an Indonesian language interpreter and translator in Java and Bali. Marie attended the Pratt Institute and New York University, and she earned a bachelor's degree. She also holds a master's degree in socio-linguistics from Stanford University. At age 60, Marie married the love of her life, Del Grandstaff. She loved to tell of their travels and wonderful life together. Marie was multilingual-in English, German, and Indonesian. She was an author, lecturer, and translator of several books. Her writing was greatly influenced by her close-knit family upbringing, travel, teaching, spirituality, love for her late husband Del, family, friends, and appreciation for music. She was a gifted pianist and harpist, and served on the advisory board of the Harp Foundation in Phoenix. She lived in Surprise, Arizona and was active with the Grail, as well as many civic and cultural causes. Her most recent book, Marie's Journey of Love, is the story of her life. Marie loved her family and valued her Kansas roots. She also loved her many friends and will be sorely missed. Her legacy was truly one of love and the rippling effects are felt among all who were lucky to know her. Marie's memorial service is on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 10 a.m., at Our Lady Of Lourdes Church, 19002 N. 128th Ave., Sun City West, Arizona 85375. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
