Maricopa County saw a sharp spike in COVID-19 case reports on Tuesday, with officials reporting 2,900 new cases.
The numbers, from the Maricopa County Department of Health, brought the total number of cases to 179,970. The county also reported 22 deaths on Tuesday, up to 3,817 total.
The numbers represented a four-fold increase to what was reported on Monday, when 787 cases and no deaths were registered. Mondays are typically the slowest day in reporting new cases.
Those numbers are pushing the seven-day average for county cases significantly higher. That average stood at 1,395 as of Nov. 13, up from Oct. 1 when it was 236 cases.
The seven-day average also was up more than 150 over the average on Nov. 12.
The county’s seven-day daily average of deaths, which lags behind cases by two to three weeks, stood at 7 on Oct. 31, but county data indicate that rate will be rising over the next two weeks.
During the county’s summer spike, cases reached 3,809 cases in a day on June 29. The county is experiencing another surge, but case numbers in recent days, with last Friday’s high of 1,495 cases, just crossed a third of the worst day in the summer. The current surge shows no signs yet of slowing down.
