Dec. 21 marked the national Homeless Person’s Memorial Day, and also marked over 1,000 deaths this year alone for the homeless in Maricopa County.
That number means more than double the number of people experiencing homelessness have died 2022 compared with 2021, according to a statement form the Central Arizona Shelter Services. Last December, CASS reported approximately 500 individuals had died on the streets.
“Our community has a responsibility to recognize the value and dignity of every one of our neighbors, whether housed or unhoused,” said Lisa Glow, CEO of CASS in the statement release. “This is especially poignant as we are seeing increasing numbers of senior citizens in our shelters. At CASS, we need community support and financial donations in order to provide for our seniors to ensure that no senior ever has to sleep on the streets of Maricopa County.”
