Maricopa County recorded 29 new coronavirus-related deaths Tuesday, the highest toll since Sept. 18, and recorded 1,402 new coronavirus cases, which is just eight shy of the county’s highest case tally since July.

The county is undergoing its largest surge in cases since the summer, with seven-day daily average of cases at 1,187 Monday, more than five times what it was on Oct. 1, at 236 cases. During the county’s summer spike, cases reached reached a high of 3,825 cases in a day on June 29. Last Friday’s tally of 1,410 cases, the high for the fall, just crossed a third of the worst day in the summer. The current increase in cases shows no signs yet of slowing down.

After staying below 700 new coronavirus cases a day for nearly three months, Maricopa County has topped 1,400 cases for the second time in five days. Tuesday’s new case total was the sixth straight day the county topped 1,000 cases.

Tuesday’s toll of 29 virus-related deaths was the most since the county recorded 34 on Sept. 18. The county’s seven-day daily average of virus deaths has remained flat at 14 for three days but has jumped up from an average of five a day as recently as Thursday, Oct. 29.

Hospitalizations are increasing as well, rising from an seven-day average of 12 a new hospitalizations a day to an average of 43 a day between Sept. 17 and Oct. 31, the most recent day of complete data.
