Cars and trucks have accidents every day in the Valley. But trains, some a mile long carrying hundreds of tons of freight, are not on most people’s radars when it comes dealing with accidents or derailments.
Still, tragic events can happen. The notion of trains derailing has been brought to the forefront after a Norfolk Southern train hauing several cars filled vinyl chloride derailed outside East Palestine, Ohio, in early February, causing an environmental hazard that forced people from their homes and has residents on the town on the Pennsylvania border questioning government officials who say it’s safe to return.
On Thursday, the Associated Press reported two BNSF trains derailed in separate incidents in Arizona and Washington state on March 16.
