Maricopa County pledges $10M to boost Wickenburg affordable housing

Posted

Maricopa County is taking a step to address the pressing need for housing by partnering with the town of Wickenburg.

The county is allocating $10 million to an affordable housing construction project known as Wickenburg Apartments. The new housing is estimated to support up to 675 people per year, according to a press release.

"This investment will have a lasting impact, not only providing residents with quality housing options for decades to come but also serving as a catalyst to seed additional development in Wickenburg,” Clint Hickman, District 4, chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, stated.

Wickenburg took action when a housing needs assessment conducted in August 2022 identified an extreme need for affordable housing in the area to support the local workforce and attract more families to the area. Officials hosted meetings with local employers and the community to conceptualize this 15-acre project located on the southwest corner of Wickenburg Way and Saguaro Drive.

Upon completion the development will consist of 208 units, offering a mix of 104 one-bedroom units, 78 two-bedroom units, and 26 three-bedroom units.

Housing will be available to income-eligible individuals and families with a household income ranging from 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income, which ranges from $30,000 to $74,800 per year for a family of four.

Wickenburg Apartments residents will have access to a range of amenities including a community space, playgrounds, walking and bike paths, and outdoor areas for gatherings. Local nonprofits will collaborate to provide essential services, including financial literacy, job placement, nutrition, and digital literacy programs.

Maricopa County’s $10 million contribution to the $68 million development is being funded by America Rescue Plan Act dollars.

This initiative reflects Maricopa County's commitment to addressing housing affordability challenges by facilitating access to safe, affordable housing for its residents.
