Maricopa County distributed $1.5 million in federal funding for programs related to coronavirus relief earlier this month and earmarked $5 million more for future spending for housing efforts.
In the spring, the county received $398 million as its share of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act or CARES Act passed by Congress, which pumped $2 trillion dollars into various parts of the U.S. economy to combat business shutdowns deemed necessary to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Early county CARES Act expenditures included purchasing personal protective equipment, hiring extra medical personnel, disinfection and sanitation services, and mitigating the spread of disease among vulnerable populations.
