Maricopa College District draws criticism for its moves against diversity, inclusion

The decision by the Maricopa County Community College District to remove policies and curb programs aimed at diversity, equity and inclusion is drawing community backlash.

A executive order from President Donald Trump targeting educational institutions that had programs aimed at marginalized groups on what has been more commonly known as DEI is fueling tension and anxiety among members in those communities, according to Lee Bebout, an Arizona State University professor who works in the subject matter.

The executive order, dated Jan. 20, called for state agencies and departments to “terminate” all diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
