The 2020 Census shows Peoria’s population increased 27% to 191,000 during the past 10 years. This means the city is federally mandated to redistrict its council boundaries, that is, adjust voting district boundaries in accordance with the population shift from the new 2020 Census data.
Therefore a new updated city council map must be redrawn and approved by the end of this year. This means many Peoria citizens will have different representation come next year’s election.
Over the next few months, the city will face a compacted time frame to bring this to fruition due to delays during the pandemic. Officials say the updated map will be in effect for next year’s August and November elections.
