An 18-year-old man was killed and two teenage girls, including one who was pregnant, were injured Thursday after a collision sent a car onto a Phoenix sidewalk.
The incident happened around 11:15 a.m. near 35th Avenue and Bell Road.
Phoenix police said a Dodge Avenger was traveling westbound on Bell when it entered the intersection at a high rate of speed and collided with a Ford Mustang as it turned left in front of the Dodge.
The impact caused the Avenger to rotate and travel about 100 feet until it struck a curb and four pedestrians on a sidewalk.
An 18-year-old male pedestrian to was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as Jonathan Marroquin. A 15-year-old girl who was 31 weeks pregnant suffered serious injuries. Police said her unborn baby died at the hospital. An 18-year-old female pedestrian is expected to recover.
The two drivers, a 25-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, were not injured, police said in an update Friday morning.
Impairment was ruled out as factors for both drivers. However, police said speed appears to be a factor for the 25-year-old. Upon completion of the investigation, charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault, and endangerment will be submitted.
