A man received burns to his body Monday evening after an accident in Surprise.

On March 13 at about 6 p.m., the Surprise Fire-Medical Department responded to a vehicle crash at the train tracks near 136th and Peoria avenues.

According to Battalion Chief Julie Moore, a 24-year-old male driver sustained 50 percent burns to his body. There were no passengers in his vehicle.

He was flown by helicopter to a burns trauma center.

According to Surprise Police Department Sgt. Norm Owens, the driver is a Peoria resident and remains in critical condition at the hospital.

Fire units from Sun City, El Mirage and Peoria assisted Surprise with the driver and fire control.

The police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
