A 30-year-old man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Friday morning in Peoria, police said.

A Phoenix police detective suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting that occurred about 10 a.m. Jan. 5 near 87th Avenue and Bell Road.

Detectives assigned to the Fugitive Apprehension and Investigations Detail were in the area to arrest 30-year-old Junior Reyes, police said.

He had an outstanding felony warrant and probable cause to be arrested for two counts of aggravated assault on two Phoenix police officers from a previous incident, according to a police department release.

Reyes was in the area just south of Bell Road when authorities attempted to arrest him.

“During this apprehension, Reyes produced a handgun, and gunfire was exchanged between multiple FAID detectives and Reyes,” the release stated.

During the gunfire exchange, one detective was hit. He was taken to a hospital and has been treated and released, police said.

Reyes did not survive his gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Peoria Police Department is investigating.
