Man killed by police identified after wielding knife in west Phoenix

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting in west Phoenix about 8 p.m. Oct. 11.
Officers responded to a 911 call of a fight at an apartment complex near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Officers were informed by radio dispatch that a man and a woman were fighting, and the man was armed with a knife, according to a press release.
When officers arrived, they found the man, identified as 47-year-old Francisco Aviles Barcenas, holding a woman down on the ground by an apartment building. The man was holding a knife to the woman’s throat and the officer gave multiple commands to the man to stop, the release said. The man continued to hold the knife by the woman’s throat and the officer-involved shooting occurred, according to the report.

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting in west Phoenix about 8 p.m. Oct. 11.
Officers responded to a 911 call of a fight at an apartment complex near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Officers were informed by radio dispatch that a man and a woman were fighting, and the man was armed with a knife, according to a press release.

The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified, according the release.
After the shooting, the officer pulled the woman away from the man and took her to safety. The fire department was called and determined the man died from his injuries on scene. There were no other injuries to any community member or officer.
The Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division will be investigating the shooting.
