A 62-year-old man has been identified as the person killed Dec. 18 in an officer-involved shooting at a  fast-food restaurant in north Phoenix.

Marion Douglas Joyner was killed after police say he fired a rifle at officers while inside the restaurant.

He died after police returned gunfire during the incident, which occurred just after 11 a.m. near 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Officers arrived at the restaurant after learning the man with the rifle threatened those inside, causing all customers and employees leave the building, police said.

Officers surrounded the building and closed down nearby roads.

“Before officers could start negotiations, the gunman shot at officers from inside the restaurant hitting a parked patrol car. Officers returned fire as additional resources made their way to the scene,” the release stated.

The suspect died at the scene.

A drone along with special assignment unit members were sent into the business and confirmed no further threat existed and no additional victims were inside the business. No officers were injured, police said.
