A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for mutilating the body of a man who authorities allege was killed by a gang, authorities said.
Manuel Carrasco Calderon was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in connection with his actions after the murder of Bernardo Pantaleon. He will also be on supervised probation for four years after he is released from prison, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
Bernardo Pantaleon’s body was found Nov. 26, 2023, at Mountain View Park in Phoenix. Several members of the North Side 15th Avenue criminal street gang were arrested.
Carrasco Calderon denied being a member of the gang, the release stated, adding he “was arrested and charged for assisting the gang by mutilating the victim’s body postmortem.”
In December 2023, Carrasco Calderon was indicted on two counts: assisting a criminal street gang and dead person – improper practice. He pleaded guilty in January 2025, according to the MCAO.
