Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell's office announced that a 33-year-old man received a lengthy sentence for a 2024 incident in which officers say he fired a gun at them.

Cody Long  has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault as a Class 2 felony.
  • One count of aggravated assault as a Class 3 felony.
  • One count of misconduct involving weapons, a Class 4 felony.
  • One count of unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle, a Class 5 felony.

On a March 2024 evening, Chandler Police were called to a hotel after a staff member reported a violent domestic disturbance, the office wrote in a news release. The victim told investigators that she and Long had gotten into a fight, and she asked him to leave the hotel room, making it clear he was no longer welcome to stay.

That’s when Long turned violent, police wrote. He assaulted the victim and took her phone so she couldn’t call for help. He then tied her up to prevent her from escaping and threatened her with a handgun.

While Long was in the bathroom, the victim managed to escape the hotel room and call for help.

When officers arrived, they located Long in the hotel parking lot and attempted to make contact. Long pulled out a handgun and started firing at the officers, police stated.

As officers took cover, they returned fire, striking Long. He was transported to the hospital and then taken into custody.

“Knowing her life was in danger, this domestic violence survivor had the courage to break free from a violent offender,” County Attorney Mitchell stated in the release. “We will continue to stand with victims and ensure dangerous abusers face the consequences of their actions.”
