Man gets 12 years in fatal Mesa crash while driving over 110 mph

A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing a fatal crash in Mesa while driving impaired at 110 mph and fleeing the scene, authorities said Wednesday.

Omar De La Pena will be on seven years of supervised probation after serving his sentence, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

De La Pena failed to stop for a red light while traveling south on Greenfield Road near McKellips Road. He rear-ended a vehicle stopped in a left-turn lane, pushing it into the intersection. Additional vehicles were involved as the collision unfolded, the release stated
