Police identify man fatally shot in Phoenix alley

Jonte Hendrix, 31, has been identified as the victim found dead Jan. 21 behind a home near 20th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

When officers arrived at the scene about 10 p.m., they found him with a gunshot wound. He died at a hospital, police said.

During the detectives' investigation, a man admitted to shooting the victim, fearing for the safety of his relative after the victim threw a rock at him. Detectives spoke to the relative, who provided a similar statement, according to a release.

Both men were released, and a charging decision will be made at the end of the investigation, which remains active, police said.
