Man dies in gunfire exchange with Mesa police

A 28-year-old man died Thursday night during an exchange of gunfire with SWAT officers after he barricaded himself in a Mesa apartment, police said.

Shawn Gagne was pronounce dead July 6 at an apartment complex near Mesa Drive and Brown Road, police reported Friday.

Officers responded to the complex at about 9:30 p.m. when they received reports of shots fired.

A 28-year-old man died Thursday night during an exchange of gunfire with SWAT officers after he barricaded himself in a Mesa apartment, police said.

Shawn Gagne was pronounce dead July 6 at an apartment complex near Mesa Drive and Brown Road, police reported Friday.

Officers responded to the complex at about 9:30 p.m. when they received reports of shots fired.

A caller said a woman came to her apartment after a  domestic violence altercation with the suspect and also reported hearing a gunshot coming from the suspect’s apartment, according to police.

While officers attempted to contact the suspect, he opened the front door with a gun in his hand and then shut the door, “creating a barricade situation,” police said.

SWAT officers took over, and “sometime during the negotiations an officer-involved shooting occurred leaving an adult man deceased. Multiple officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect,” police said in a release.

Mesa authorities said the investigation is in its preliminary stages with officers and witnesses still needing to be interviewed.

No one else was injured, police said.
