INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
A 22-year-old man died Wednesday, days after he was injured at a neighborhood bar along Central Avenue, Phoenix police said.
Detectives are looking for video evidence as their investigation into the killing of Rafael Montoya continues.
The brawl took place about 2:30 a.m. March 16. Two Phoenix police officers were working security, in an off-duty capacity, at the bar in the 700 block of North Central Avenue.
During their shift, “a large fight broke out between multiple individuals on the street, just outside the business,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.
Officers attempted to break up the fight and were told by witnesses that Montoya was lying on the ground. He had injuries, police said, and was taken to a hospital with severe head trauma.
Investigators processed the scene, spoke to witnesses and searched for video evidence. Several people in the fight were interviewed, identified and released.
No arrests have been made. Detectives believe there are more individuals who may have captured video footage of the incident, according to the release.
Anyone with information can call Phoenix police or Silent Witness, if they wish to remain anonymous.
