A shooting Sunday night left one man dead and sent two Phoenix police officers to a hospital with injuries, authorities said.

At about 8 p.m. Oct. 20, a patrol unit with two officers was dispatched to a call of a man, armed with a large knife, trespassing inside of a business in the 3600 block of West Glendale Avenue, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

When officers arrived, a store employee told officers the man was still inside the store. Officers called out to the man who ran into the store’s stockroom, police said.

Officers followed the man and found him on top of a built-in freezer. The officers “gave the man commands to come down and feigned cooperation as he got to the ground,” the release stated.

“As the officers were attempting to handcuff the man, he ran out of the stockroom and towards the front of the store. Both officers struggled with the man and used a Taser with minimal effect. The man was able to gain control of a Taser and pointed it towards one of the officers which resulted in the officer-involved shooting.”

Officers provided aid to the man until fire department personnel arrived. The man died at the scene.

Both officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the fight. Both have been released.

Detectives continue to process the scene early Monday morning as the investigation remains active.
