Man claims he fell asleep in fatal hit and runs in Phoenix
Posted
Phoenix police arrested a man in connection with hit and run collisions that killed two people.
L.C. Jones III, 29, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail Monday on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, endangerment, and hit and run.
Police said they developed probable cause to arrest Mr. Jones after determining he was the driver who fled the scenes of three hit and runs Saturday night.
Court documents state Mr. Jones admitted himself into the hospital after the collision, where he told staff he fell asleep at the wheel and killed two people.
Police found him Monday at the hospital, where he again provided details on the collisions. He said he had taken an unknown type of pain pills earlier in the day.
The first occurred Saturday night near 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road, where a vehicle Mr. Jones occupied struck Nester Lopez, 17. Lopez was pronounced dead.
A truck was also struck afterwards by the redirected vehicles. Its occupants were not harmed.
After his vehicle became disabled, Mr. Jones reportedly ran from the scene on foot and had been on the loose until Monday.
“He continued driving after the first one and ran away from the second one because he was (scared) and freak out because his license was suspended,” court documents state.
Mr. Jones was jailed in lieu of a $500,000 cash-only bond. He is due in court July 23 and 26.
