Man, 86, hit by van, killed in northwest Phoenix

An 86-year-old man was hit by a van Thursday morning and died on the road near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, police said.

The collision occurred about 11:45 a.m. Oct. 19, and detectives said witnesses told them that Joseph Pavlics, 86, either fell on Bell Road or was attempting to cross it when he was struck by a van entering Bell Road from a private drive.

The collision remains under investigation. The van driver stayed at the scene, and there are no pending charges, police said.
