MAG, municipal leaders fight for transportation funding

As the clock ticks closer to the end of Proposition 400, a Maricopa County tax that historically has supported transportation projects and maintenance around the Valley, local officials report impacts already being felt from the uncertainty of the tax’s future.

Prop 400 is a half-cent sales tax law initially put to Maricopa County voters by the Arizona Legislature and voted into law by county voters in 2004. It has been renewed and modified through legislation and was poised to be potentially extended again in 2022 by voters with new state legislation — beyond Prop 400’s scheduled Dec. 31, 2025 expiration date.

However, that 2022 legislation was vetoed by then-Gov. Doug Ducey during his final year in office.
