Governments around the Valley are working to create a regional system of local homeless shelters and a regionally consistent approach to homelessness, rather than a piecemeal, city-by-city approach.
“Homelessness is inherently regional, and efforts to address homelessness must be regional,” said Amy St. Peter, the deputy executive director of the Maricopa Association of Government, which is leading the effort.
On it’s annual “Point-in-Time Count” last year, MAG counted 7,419 people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County on the night of Jan. 27, 2020. MAG opted out of the count this year because of the coronavirus.
