Loud cicadas to emerge in Valley

The loud hum could be mistaken for a piece of machinery grinding on a large piece of metal or even the constant rhythm of a didgeridoo.

Instead, it’s probably the Apache cicada you are hearing making a piercing sound that seems not to go away during Arizona summer months.

“(This year) is supposed to be a big year (for cicadas),” said Shaku Nair, entomologist and associate in extension at the University of Arizona Cooperative in Maricopa County.
