Look back at the rainiest year in Phoenix history

Monsoon ends this month, and while meteorologists and residents alike analyze how this year’s rainy season is going, we take a look back the wettest year of rain on record in Phoenix. Hoping for rain is an annual wish in Arizona – they had just the opposite problem here 120 years ago.

This month marks the official end of monsoon season in the Valley – on Sept. 30 to be exact. The average monsoon rainfall in Phoenix yields about 2.43 inches, or about one-third of the Valley’s total annual precipitation.

Whether or not you experience that much rain at your own residence is another story at the mercy of unpredictable storm patterns. And even if at times it doesn’t quite feel like the Valley reaches that average, we do and then some. Consider that the 2022 monsoon brought 2.23 inches of rain, which was right on target, and in 2021 residents were blessed with a whopping 4.2 inches of monsoon rain per the official gauge at Sky Harbor International Airport.
