ELECTION 2026

Longtime GOP Politicians squaring off in LD27 Senate primary

District includes Glendale, Peoria, slice of Phoenix

Legislative District 27, which covers most of northern Glendale, a small portion of north Peoria and most of Peoria east and south of Loop 101, and a small chunk of west Phoenix, has only one competitive primary election race but it is a state senate contest between two well-known GOP lawmakers.

Incumbent Sen. Kevin Payne assumed the role as LD27 senator on Jan. 13, 2025, taking over the seat after Sen. Anthony Kern stepped down to an unsuccessful bid for the Eighth Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Now Kern, a Glendale resident, is running against Payne, a Peoria resident, in the LD27 Republican primary on July 21.
